TESOL Certification Courses can be expensive and time consuming. There are a lot of options
out there to choose from. We want you to have the most information to make the right choice.
Residential Certification Courses:
These courses require you to be at a specific location at a specific time. If you’re lucky, there
might be one in your area, but most likely you will have to travel somewhere else to take a
residential certification course. This means the added expenses of going there, paying for a
place to stay, etc. This is on top of the course fee itself, which generally runs into the thousands
of dollars. Another thing to consider is that many residential courses, such as the CELTA, have
failure rates sometimes as high as 50%, meaning all that time and money might be for
nothing.
All of this said, residential courses are probably one of your best bets in obtaining an
internationally recognized TESOL certificate. However, most people do not have either the time
or money to take one.
Online Certification Courses:
These courses can vary widely in quality, requirements, and price.
Some online courses charge fees comparable to residential courses, without any guarantee
that the online certificate will be recognized internationally.
Some online courses print the words “ONLINE CERTIFICATE” on the actual certificate, sending
a big red flag to future employers and seriously cutting its acceptance, no matter who issued it.
Some online courses have materials that, frankly, reflect old fashioned theories of learning and
don’t really prepare teachers to do anything practical in the classroom. Many courses rely on
essay answers to questions about TESOL. This can be very helpful in showing that you’ve read
the material, but isn’t something you can use in the classroom.
So how is the Wave International Certificate in TESOL different?
1. Price. Our prices reflect what we consider to be reasonable compensation for the tutor and
administrative staff services that you get with our course. We offer two levels of pricing for this
reason. With the $250 Standard TESOL course, you get the time and attention of a personal
tutor, a transcript, and a recommendation letter. With the $100 Starter TESOL course, you get a
lesser degree of personal attention and therefore a lower price. It’s up to you to decide which
method suits your purposes best.
2. Certificate. Our certificates are printed on high quality paper with a printed watermark to
ensure authenticity. They carry two real signatures as well as student and tutor identification
numbers. They do NOT, in any way, state ONLINE CERTIFICATE anywhere on either the
certificate or any of the supporting documentation such as the transcript, recommendation letter,
etc. Employers can easily email us for verification.
3. Material. Our certificate course reflects real classroom teaching and prepares students by
clearly explaining many industry terms as well as providing extensive lesson plan preparation.
Students will work with material from Cambridge University’s Teacher Knowledge Test as well
as become familiar with the standardized international English language tests such as the
TOEFL, TOEIC, IELTS, etc. These features prepare students to have intelligent and informed
interviews with prospective employers as well as being ready to step into a classroom.
4. Career Building. Included with every Standard certificate is one free endorsement course of
your choosing. Our endorsement options include Young Learners, Business English,
Academic English, Conversation, and Asian Learners. Our endorsements are based on
internationally sought out specialties. Additional endorsement courses can be taken at
reduced fees, offering you even more options for enhancing your CV.
5. Security. Wave of English will give you every opportunity to complete the certificate course
successfully. This means that you can redo any assignment to receive a higher grade, and
redo the assignments as many times as you need to until you pass. You can be sure that your
investment of time and money into the course will not be wasted.
How does it work?
Enrollment: To enroll, simply click on the Buy Now button next to the course of your choice. This
will direct you to the PayPal secure payment site where your credit card info will be processed.
After Enrollment: When we receive your payment, we will send you the course e-book as a Word
or PDF attachment. You can begin work immediately. You submit all your assignments to
certificate@waveofenglish.com
Submitting an Assignment: To submit an assignment, you email it as an attachment. If your
browser doesn’t support attachments, then you can paste it in the body of the email. When your
assignment has been submitted, the course administrator will forward it to your course tutor.
The course tutor will correct your assignment. The course administrator will forward your
assignment back to you with your tutor’s comments and score. All questions that you have
about the assignments can be submitted directly to the course administrator at
certificate@waveofenglish.com
Completing the Course: When you have submitted all your assignments and received a passing
score, you will receive your Certificate by mail along with a recommendation letter from your tutor
and a transcript of your grades.

Common Misconceptions About Working in TESOL:
1. Being a Native Speaker of English is enough.
While being a native speaker has tremendous advantages, it is not enough to guarantee
success in the TESOL industry. Being able to speak English and being able to teach it are
totally different things. A TESOL course can open your eyes to the amount of knowledge a
teacher of English must have to be able to explain and demonstrate points of the language.
Untrained native speakers abound in the TESOL industry and lower the profession for everyone
in terms of salary, respect, and job satisfaction. Many non - native speakers of English can be
excellent teachers because they can recognize the difficulties that students have with language
based on their own experience of learning English.
2. Teaching English in all countries is essentially the same.
English language teaching regulations and expectations vary greatly all over the world.
Northern Asia and the Middle East offer top salaries in exchange for long work hours and
unpredictable work environments. Despite the promises of many TESOL courses, the
countries of the EU are generally not open to teachers who do not hold EU passports. Salaries
in many countries, particularly South America and Southeast Asia, may be enough to live on in
those countries but are not going to make you rich or give you the opportunity to save a lot of
money. And, of course, the biggest difference is that all countries have different attitudes
toward English teachers and foreigners in general that can be a big factor in how happy and
comfortable you will be.
